South Wales Central MS and Former Welsh Conservative Senedd Leader Andrew RT Davies has condemned the Labour Government’s decision to cut funding to the Western Gateway – a cross-border initiative designed to boost economic links and rail connectivity between South Wales and the West of England.

The Western Gateway was set to deliver significant investment in improving rail infrastructure between Cardiff, Newport, Bristol, and beyond – helping to drive economic growth, create high-quality jobs, and lift living standards across South Wales.

Mr Davies said:

“This is a bitter blow to South Wales – people here don’t want more politicians in Cardiff Bay, they want better jobs, better wages, and better connections.

“Our economy naturally looks east to the West of England more than anywhere else, and cutting this funding will keep people in poverty and reduce living standards.

“Labour’s decision shows they’re more interested in constitutional vanity projects than improving lives in communities like ours.”
