South Wales Central MS and Former Welsh Conservative Senedd Leader has called for honesty from politicians on the steel crisis.
Responding to claims from Plaid Cymru nationalist politicians that blast furnaces at Port Talbot could have been saved, he said it was not tenable to make this argument while supporting ideologically motivated green policies that made primary steelmaking in Wales unviable.
He pointed to comments from MP Liz Savile-Roberts, who has been vocal on Port Talbot in recent days – yet slammed then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to row back on Britain’s net-zero commitments.
She had previously claimed there is “no economic case for increasing our reliance on fossil fuels.”
Mr Davies said:
“It is impossible for me to look Welsh steelworkers in the eye when Tata are opening new blast furnaces in India, but shutting down capacity here in Wales.
“Offshoring our emissions brings no environmental benefits, yet it costs jobs and livelihoods.
“Those politicians who won’t admit this yet lament job losses at Port Talbot are guilty of crocodile tears. It’s time for an honest conversation about the impacts of ideologically motivated green policies on jobs and industry in Wales.”
