South Wales Central MS Andrew RT Davies has slammed Labour Senedd ministers for failing to commit to review road safety on the A48 in the Vale of Glamorgan, following a series of traffic accidents on the stretch of road.

An incident near Bonvilston on 1st April marked the fifth fatality on the A48 in the Vale in recent years.

In a letter to Transport Minister Ken Skates, Mr Davies requested an engineering review of the road, to assess what, if any, measures are required to improve road safety.

In response, Mr Skates provided generic figures regarding road traffic accidents, without committing to assess the road in question.

Mr Davies said:

“The A48 forms part of the trunk road network, so Labour Senedd ministers have a responsibility to ensure it’s safe.

“It’s unacceptable that they’ve refused to review the stretch in question – a blanket approach does not work when it comes to road safety, the specific conditions of the road must be assessed.

“Fobbing local people off with some generic statistics is not on – there have been five fatalities on this road in recent years and Senedd ministers must take action to ensure this is addressed.”
