South Wales Central MS and former Welsh Conservative Senedd Leader Andrew RT Davies has criticised Health Board bosses after it was revealed that a patient watchdog was kept in the dark about a damning report into criminal activity at Wales’ largest hospital.

In a letter to Mr Davies, Lauranne Cullen – Regional Director for Cardiff and Vale of Llais, the statutory body representing citizen voices in health and social care – confirmed that the organisation was not made aware of the report’s contents until the day it was published.

She described the situation as “deeply troubling.”

The report exposed serious failings at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), including tolerated theft and illegal drug use by staff, pigeons flying around operating theatres, and widespread breaches of procedure.

Mr Davies said his constituents in the Vale of Glamorgan – many of whom are patients at UHW – would be horrified by the findings.

Mr Davies said:

“This is the latest shocking revelation about how the Health Board has handled matters at University Hospital of Wales.

“The patient watchdog should be front and centre in these discussions – instead, it was deliberately kept in the dark.

“I’ve long argued that the Health Board should not be investigating itself – that’s nothing more than marking its own homework. Labour Senedd ministers have failed to hold leadership to account. They must intervene, and they must do so urgently.”
