A review has been launched into ‘serious concerns’ about practices at operating theatres at University Hospital of Wales after allegations that spectators were allowed in while surgery was being carried out.

The Cardiff and Vale Health Board has said there will be a 16 week review after a whistleblower claimed a staff survey revealed anger over a toxic culture within the hospital’s theatres for years.

Andrew RT Davies MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central and former Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said:

“These allegations are incredibly serious, and the health board has serious questions to answer.

“Given that these instances date back years, patients and staff will rightly ask whether these concerns have been sat on.

“While it’s vital there is a review into these allegations, it must be an independent investigation, and the health board must not be allowed to mark their own homework.”
