South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has paid tribute to postal workers on a visit to Royal Mail’s Bridgend sorting office.

December is Royal Mail’s busiest time of year, owing to Christmas post.

Mr Davies met with Centre Manager Martin, who explained the main changes and challenges facing the industry.

Changing consumer habits have resulted in the office handling an ever decreasing proportion of letters – with packages and parcels becoming far more commonplace.

As a result, the centre is on the verge of reaching capacity. Larger premises will be required to provide the storage space needed.

Mr Davies said:

“Our postal workers play an essential role in keeping our local economy going. We rely on them to deliver goods and correspondence in a timely manner.

“As our shopping habits change, the post service is responding. I’m exceptionally grateful to Martin for explaining the challenges faced.

“It was a pleasure to visit the Bridgend sorting office and I want to say a big thank you to the team for being so generous with their time.”
