Commenting on headline figures showing a significant reduction in net migration to Britain, South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has warned this must not be allowed to hide a “demographic timebomb that must be defused before it’s too late”.

Net migration fell to 204,000 in the year ending June 2025, a figure Mr Davies said was “still far too high”.

Just under 900,000 people came to the UK during the period, with 693,000 people emigrating elsewhere.

109,000 more British nationals left the UK than arrived during the year.

Mr Davies said:

“Over 900,000 people came to Britain last year, net migration figures are only down because many people left.

“A loss of high skilled, working age British people will have major implications for our economy.

“Urgent action must be taken to defuse this demographic timebomb before it’s too late.”
