Commenting on tax rises announced in the Autumn Budget by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has said the moves will hurt Vale residents.

Workers across the Vale of Glamorgan face paying more tax as a result of the Chancellor’s decision to freeze income tax thresholds.

A new pensions tax, in the form of changes to salary sacrifice schemes, will see people pay more tax on their pension contributions. This will make it much harder to save for retirement.

The Government will increase welfare spending by a further £9 billion.

This includes plans to remove the two child benefit cap, a key demand of Plaid Cymru separatist and Labour Senedd members.

Mr Davies said:

“Fairness should be at the heart of every budget. But the Chancellor’s announcement will achieve the opposite.

“Vale workers will take home less to fund the expanded welfare system demanded by Plaid Cymru separatist and Labour Senedd members.

“A system that leaves people better off on welfare than those in work is the opposite of compassionate.

“A welfare system should be about providing a safety net, not trapping people on benefits when those in power should be helping them earn a living.

“Imposing a tax on Vale workers’ earnings and pensions to fund this system is unconscionable and unfair.”
