FRIDAY 31ST OCTOBER 2025

A reading expert abruptly quit a Welsh Government role this week, and her comments about Senedd ministers were damning.

Elizabeth Nonweiler resigned from Senedd ministers’ Expert Reading Panel, saying the group has achieved nothing in virtually a year.

As we know, reading standards in Welsh schools fall far behind those in England.

The last Conservative Government introduced successful reforms, making the teaching of phonics mandatory.

For separatist reasons, Senedd ministers refused to follow suit. They did not want to be seen to be copying England.

The consequence? Thousands of Welsh pupils leave primary school unable to read.

The Panel on which Mrs Nonweiler sat was set up in a belated attempt to turn this around.

But she says no progress has been made and mixed messages are being sent.

Tellingly, she said, “This isn’t about politics or pride. It’s about children.”

This is alarming.

It suggests Senedd ministers haven’t learned or changed.

It’s a sign the separatist ideology is still the main consideration of their thinking.

And it’s not just schools where it’s led to failings. It’s also the reason vital NHS reforms haven’t been introduced, necessary infrastructure has not been built and priority has been focused on putting more politicians in the Senedd.

It’s not just Labour who are responsible for this.

It’s in the DNA of Plaid Cymru separatists too. In fact, they’re even worse.

Just this week, separatist leader Rhun ap Iorwerth was in Scotland meeting Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP.

The parties are exploring a “progressive alliance”, which shows Plaid’s priority lies in breaking our nation apart.

Progressivism is a poisonous ideology, that puts open borders and the rights of criminals before leaders’ duties to keep law abiding people safe.

The people of Wales want secure borders and good public services, not Plaid’s priorities of 36 more Senedd members and a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers.

Be assured I will continue calling them out.
