Today marks the 59th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster, one of the worst tragedies to ever happen to Wales.

On the morning of 21st October 1966, 116 children left home for school, never to return.

We will never forget the 144 people who lost their lives that day, and the impacts still felt by the community all these years on.

The disaster is a reminder of the duty those in authority have to the people they exist to serve, and the tragic consequences that can occur if, through negligence or lack of care, those responsibilities are not discharged.

Today, my thoughts are with the entire community of Aberfan and those still feeling the effects of the disaster, almost six decades on.
