South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has demanded local councils refocus their priorities to combat fly-tipping, after campaigners in Bridgend said they’d “given up” reporting incidents following lack of action.
Mr Davies, who said he frequently receives reports from constituents raising similar concerns in the Vale of Glamorgan, pointed out street cleanliness is a core service councils are supposed to provide.
He criticised the Labour-run Vale of Glamorgan Council for the amount of resources allocated to ideological schemes like diversity, equality and inclusion and the “County of Sanctuary” for asylum seekers, while street cleanliness was not at the level required.
Mr Davies said:
“We all have a right to clean streets, and litter and fly-tipping are deeply unpleasant for our communities.
“Local councils are the bodies responsible for combatting this, both ensuring incidents are cleared in a timely manner and that enforcement action is taken against those responsible.
“There are several ways to achieve this, including through mobile surveillance cameras and searching dumped waste for evidence that leads to the perpetrator.
“In the Vale of Glamorgan, insufficient resources are allocated towards combatting this problem, all while the Council funds divisive projects like DEI and making the Vale a County of Sanctuary for asylum seekers.
“The Council must scrap these ideological spends and focus all resources on core services.”
