South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has said recent traffic chaos between Rhoose and Barry demonstrates the “madness” of building 400 extra dwellings on land at Weycock Cross.

A post on social media showed traffic gridlock on the route at 08.00 on Thursday 16th October.

Mr Davies has been contacted by several constituents complaining that existing infrastructure is insufficient, and that additional development will make matters worse.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Draft Replacement Local Development Plan includes Weycock Cross as a “key site”, earmarked for almost 400 houses.

It is located next to a busy road junction, where capacity issues lead to tailbacks like those experienced in Thursday’s incident.

Mr Davies said:

“Rhoose residents already face chaos and misery on our roads because the existing infrastructure cannot cope with demand.

“Adding to these problems by building almost 400 extra dwellings on the route is pure madness.

“Traffic problems in the Vale are the result of years of overdevelopment, imposed as a result of Plaid and Labour’s arbitrary housing targets.

“These were not designed to meet the Vale’s demand, they were to deal with overspill caused by excessive population growth in Cardiff.

“But this does not bother Plaid and Labour, their £55 million plan to make Wales a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers shows where they stand.”
