South Wales Central MS Andrew RT Davies has called on Senedd ministers to scrap stamp duty in Wales.

Yesterday, Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badencoch confirmed the next Conservative Government will scrap stamp duty.

But the move will only apply in England, as property transaction taxes in Wales are devolved to the Senedd.

Senedd ministers impose stamp duty on Welsh homebuyers through their “Land Transaction Tax”.

Mr Davies warned that, were stamp duty abolished in England, but Welsh people continued to face the charge, it would lead to greater calls for the Senedd to be abolished.

Mr Davies said:

“Stamp duty is a pernicious tax, leaving homebuyers with an upfront bill of many tens of thousands of pounds.

“It puts people off moving home, leaving many living in properties unsuitable for their needs.

“The policy announced yesterday by Kemi Badenoch will be hugely popular, but will sadly not apply to people in the Vale.

“In Wales, stamp duty is levied by Senedd ministers through their Land Transaction Tax.

“Senedd ministers must follow suit and commit to scrapping stamp duty.

“If the tax is scrapped in England, but Vale homebuyers are still left to pay, it will lead to further calls for the Senedd to be abolished.”
