Andrew RT Davies used a speech in the Senedd this week to call for the Welsh Government to provide greater support to Ty Hafan.

The Vale-based children’s hospice says it requires “a long-term, sustainable funding settlement” amid expectations that the number of children in Wales living with a life-shortening or life-limiting condition is set to rise by around 25% by 2030.

The former Welsh Tory leader said hosting Ty Hafan in his electoral region is an “uplifting and positive experience”, and called for £3 million of earmarked cash to be designated to Wales’ two children’s hospices.

Referring to the expected rise in the number of seriously ill children in the coming years, Davies asked the Welsh Government’s Health chief Jeremy Miles if he supported calls for core funding for the hospices to rise by 1% per year to 2030.

While Miles stopped short of committing to that, he paid tribute to the hospices for providing “expert care for thousands of people with life-limiting conditions.”

Andrew RT Davies MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central and former Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said:

“It’s a real source of pride for me to represent an area in which we have Ty Hafan.

“They deal with some of the most challenging environments that families could face, and the work they do is second to none.

“In the hospice sector, whilst they look after those in end-of-life situations, they also provide the valuable service of bereavement counselling to parents who have lost young children and loved ones, and who are at their most vulnerable point as well.

“They deserve to have the resources they need to carry on their exemplary work.”
