Andrew RT Davies has praised Royal Porthcawl Golf Club for hosting the AIG Women’s Open 2025.

Mr Davies visited the Open and was given a tour by Niall Farquharson, chairman of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

The South Wales Central MS said that improving Cardiff Airport would lead to even more worldwide sporting events coming to South Wales.

At the tournament, 24-year-old Miyu Yamashita from Osaka finished two shots clear of Brit Charley Hull to win her first career major.

In 2010, the 38th Ryder Cup was held at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.

Andrew RT Davies MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central and former Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said:

“It’s a real credit to Royal Porthcawl that they have hosted such a fantastic major sporting event.

“This is a world class course for a world class event, and while it’s always good to see a Brit near the top of the leaderboard in Charley Hull, I want to commend Miyu Yamashita for winning her first major, and where better to do it than here in sunny South Wales?

“This is a testament to South Wales’ ability to host the best sporting events in the world, like the Ryder Cup and the Champions League final.

“I believe if we can make Cardiff Airport a success, we will see even more superb sporting events like the Women’s Open coming to South Wales.”
