South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has demanded Senedd ministers and Labour councillors address residents’ concerns at plans to build almost 400 houses at Weycock Cross in Barry.
In an amendment to its draft Replacement Local Development Plan, the Vale of Glamorgan Council has proposed a “key site” at Weycock Cross – earmarked for 376 dwellings.
Mr Davies spent the weekend out speaking to residents of Nant Talwg, adjacent to the site. He was joined by local Conservative ward Cllr Janice Charles.
He said two issues were raised repeatedly: the proposed development and immigration.
Mr Davies pointed out the Vale has for years faced the consequences of overdevelopment, thanks to arbitrary, excessive housing targets imposed on the area by Senedd ministers.
He said this had caused huge pressures on NHS services, school places and transport infrastructure.
Mr Davies said the excessive housing targets were motivated by Senedd ministers’ extreme liberal worldview on immigration, which meant they consistently used their devolved powers to facilitate unsustainable population growth.
He pointed to Senedd ministers’ decision to designate Wales a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers, which he said demonstrated their intentions.
Mr Davies said:
“Plans for almost 400 houses at Weycock Cross are completely unsuitable and will be disastrous for Barry. Vale Conservatives stand with local residents against these plans.
“When I joined Conservative Cllr Janice Charles speaking to residents on the weekend – two things came up repeatedly: inappropriate housing development and immigration.
“These two issues are linked. The Vale has faced overdevelopment for years, thanks to Senedd ministers’ excessive housing targets.
“This has not only resulted in precious green spaces being concreted over – it’s also put huge pressures on our public services.
“These arbitrary targets were imposed by Senedd ministers to satisfy their extreme liberal worldview on immigration.
“This matter may not be devolved, but Senedd ministers’ decision to designate Wales a Nation of Sanctuary reveals their true intentions.
“I make no apologies for saying both the proposed development at Weycock Cross – and the Nation of Sanctuary – must be scrapped.”
