South Wales Central MS and Former Welsh Conservative Senedd Leader Andrew RT Davies has called on the Plaid Cymru leadership to condemn controversial group Kneecap, after they sparked outrage following comments made during the Glastonbury festival.

Kneecap, who have expressed support for the Welsh independence movement and appeared at a march attended by Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth, led a series of chants including “f*ck Keir Starmer”, in response to the prime minister’s comments that their performance should not have gone ahead.

Group member Naoise Ó Cairealláin spoke in support of bandmate Liam O’Hanna, regarding terrorism charges he was facing.

He urged the crowd to “support [O’Hanna] and let’s start a riot in the courts”.

The charge was dropped after police determined the offence was “beyond the statutory time limit for prosecution”.

Kneecap has previously repeated chants in support of the IRA.

During their performance, the band wore t-shirts emblazoned with the logo of Palestine Action, a group the government is preparing to designate as a proscribed terrorist organisation.

Mr Davies said:

“These are the latest outrageous comments we have heard from Kneecap, and come just weeks after they appeared at a march in support of Welsh independence.

“That event was attended by separatist leader Rhun ap Iorwerth, and Plaid must condemn these remarks immediately.

“Kneecap’s comments, and their association with the independence movement, shows the ugly reality of Welsh separatism.”
