South Wales Central MS Andrew RT Davies has slammed proposals to build almost 400 new houses on land in North West Barry, saying they are completely unsuitable.

The land has been identified as a “key site” by the Labour-run Vale of Glamorgan Council as part of its Replacement Local Development Plan. The site is earmarked for 376 units.

Mr Davies said developing the site, located adjacent to the Weycock Cross roundabout, would exacerbate capacity issues at the junction.

He warned it would have implications for people travelling to Barry from Rhoose and Five Mile Lane, and for residents of Pontpridd Road, Nant Talwg and Port Road.

Mr Davies also slammed Labour Senedd ministers for continually imposing arbitrary housing targets on the Vale, which he said did not match local need.

He warned that this, combined with their plans to make Wales a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers, would place even further pressures on transport infrastructure, NHS capacity, schools and other public services in Barry and the Vale.

Mr Davies said:

“It’s abundantly clear this site is not suitable for a development of this scale.

“There are existing capacity issues at the Weycock Cross roundabout, and adding almost 400 dwellings to the location will make matters worse.

“Not only will it affect residents in the immediate vicinity, living on Pontypridd Road, Nant Talwg and Port Road, it will also have knock on effects for those travelling to Barry from Five Mile Lane, Rhoose, St Athan and Llantwit Major.

“For too long, we’ve faced overdevelopment in the Vale, thanks to arbitrary housing targets imposed on our communities by Labour Senedd ministers.

“This, combined with Senedd ministers’ plans to make Wales a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers, will exacerbate existing pressures on local GP provision, dental surgeries, schools and transport infrastructure.

“These proposals must be dropped.”
